I Run For Her 2023: Breaking Records, Creating Change, and Breaking the Cycle of Domestic Violence

On Sunday October 15th 2023, people across Australia, from all walks of life joined the Got Your Back Sista’s event; ‘I Run For Her’ to say no to domestic violence.

Domestic violence, an issue that remains hidden behind closed doors, continues to cast a long and distressing shadow over the lives of thousands of women and children. The statistics are staggering — In Australia, on average, one woman is killed every nine days by an intimate partner. One in six Australian women have experienced physical or sexual violence from a current or former partner. Furthermore, children exposed to such violence experience lasting emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical trauma that can affect their entire lives.

At Got Your Back Sista, we recognise the gravity of this issue, which leads us to hosting numerous charity events to raise much needed funds to support the women and children who are escaping domestic violence. The ‘I Run For Her’ event, now in its fourth year, has seen unparalleled success, breaking donation records and inspiring communities to create lasting change.

The event unites people together to walk or run creating awareness and support for survivors on their journey to healing. Participants chose their pace, their distance, and their route, making the event accessible to everyone.

This year ‘I Run For Her’ had more than a thousand participants throughout Australia including, Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Byron Bay, these were made up of individuals, teams and businesses. We’re even more proud to share that this year we broke our donation record, raising an incredible $174,102!

The funds raised are a lifeline to the women and children affected by domestic violence.

  • $50 provides a meal for a family: A simple meal can mean more than sustenance. It can be a source of comfort, a moment of normalcy, and a symbol of hope during trying times.
  • $200 buys a mattress for a child: A child escaping domestic violence carries unimaginable emotional weight. A comfortable and safe place to sleep offers solace in turbulent times.
  • $1,000 buys white goods for the home: Essential home appliances, such as refrigerators or washing machines, make a new start possible, alleviating the challenges that survivors face.
  • $10,000 sets up a home for a family: This significant amount can secure a new beginning for a family affected by domestic violence, offering them the chance to rebuild their lives free from fear.

At Got Your Back Sista we know the power of these donations to change lives, and we’re proud to be help hundreds of women and children with our services.

As we celebrate the success of ‘I Run For Her’ 2023, we are reminded that the journey against domestic violence is far from over. The road to change is paved with passion, unity, and unwavering commitment. Together, we are creating awareness, offering support, and raising funds to break the cycle of abuse.
